World Trade Organisation (WTO)
The Department is responsible for preparing and implementing the negotiating strategy for South Africa’s engagement in the World Trade Organisation (WTO). In the Doha Round, the Department continues to work to strengthen the G20 group of developing countries which has effectively changed the negotiating dynamic in the WTO, and placed developing countries, for the first time in the history of the global trade system, at the centre of the negotiations. The Department also provides leadership in the NAMA 11 group of developing countries that seeks to ensure a developmental outcome in the industrial tariff negotiations. This latter role has been built on intense consultations within NEDLAC, and represents a highpoint of the Department’s national consultative efforts.
