The Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Zuko Godlimpi says the Jewellery Manufacturing Precinct located in the OR Tambo Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is on track to strengthen and support South Africa’s mineral beneficiation strategy. Godlimpi visited the SEZ to asses the progress, and be introduced to the different companies operating within the precinct.
According to Godlimpi, the jewellery manufacturing precinct strategy seeks to enhance manufacturing of minerals mined in South Africa into products for global consumption. This is because South Africa continues to be a major supplier of raw minerals to the global market, and also, is a strategy for governemnt to place the industry in a position where it can compete with the world’s advanced companies in the same field.
“The multi-site development at OR Tambo SEZ consists of several industry-specific precincts and will be developed in phases over a 10 to 15-year period. The full development of the jewellery manufacturing precinct provides export-focused investors at the precinct access to incentives packaged as part of the national SEZ programme, which is driven by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic),” he said.
Godlimpi added that the dtic has contributed R507 million for top structure development through the SEZ Fund. The zone currently has seven operational investors. An additional eight companies are busy with factory fitment processes and will be in operation before the end of the financial year.
“With the completion of the first precinct, additional plans are already underway to develop the OR Tambo SEZ’s second precinct, which is a 29ha SEZ gazetted land parcel, located just outside the OR Tambo Airport. Furthermore, over R1 billion in investment commitments has been secured for the OR Tambo SEZ Precinct One. Precinct One development is anticipated to create over 3 500 jobs once it is fully operational. To date, a total of 2 734 operational jobs have been created.” said Godlimpi.
