The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), will host a crucial public participation meeting that will focus on the Namakwa Special Economic Zone (NamSEZ). The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 10 August 2023, in Pofadder Community, Northern Cape, and aims to engage stakeholders in shaping the future trajectory of this significant economic initiative. This follows the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Ebrahim Patel’s notice in the government gazette which is aimed at giving the general public to comment on the designation of the proposed Namakwa Special Economic Zone.
The proposed NamSEZ is a ground-breaking development project that holds immense promise for the economic growth and prosperity of the region. The proposed SEZ spans an impressive 1 270 hectares of land and is strategically located in Namakwa, Northern Cape. It currently has an committed investment of over R29 billion that will result in the creation of 3 250 jobs during the various phases of development. This initiative is expected to unlock vast opportunities for investors, businesses, and communities alike, fostering economic diversification and job creation in the area.
The Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Ms Nomalungelo Gina, who is also a national champion of the Namakwa One Plan District Development Model, says that the leadership and unwavering commitment to inclusive economic development have been instrumental in shaping the NamSEZ project into a cornerstone of progress and prosperity for the Northern Cape.
“The Namakwa Special Economic Zone is a transformative endeavour that embodies our dedication to fostering sustainable economic growth and empowering local communities. This public participation meeting will mark a significant milestone on our journey toward realising the immense potential of the Namakwa region. I call upon all stakeholders, investors, and citizens to actively participate in this event and contribute to the shaping of NamSEZ’s future, as we work together to build a vibrant and prosperous Northern Cape”, she says.
She adds that the public participation meeting will provide a valuable platform for engaging with stakeholders, gathering feedback, and addressing any concerns or queries related to the NamSEZ project.
“We urge all interested parties to join us at this critical event, contributing their valuable insights and ideas to ensure that the development of NamSEZ aligns with the needs and aspirations of the community it aims to serve,” says Gina.
