The Cabinet has announced the appointment of Mr Simphiwe Hamilton as Director-General of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic).
A Nelson Mandela Scholar, Mr Hamilton began his career in the SANDF in 1994. He holds a Master’s in Defence Administration from Cranfield University (UK), an Honours in Politics, and a Bachelor of Military Science from Stellenbosch University.
With extensive experience in the SA Defence Industry, he has held key roles at REUTECH Group, F&R Diesel Services, and CSIR Defencetek. As Executive Director of the SA Aerospace, Maritime, and Defence Industries Association (AMD), he led major initiatives, including the Africa Aerospace and Defence Expo (2008 & 2014) and the formulation of the Defence Industry Strategy.
Mr Hamilton has also served as Group CEO of the Gauteng Growth Development Agency (GGDA) and inaugural CEO of Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone (TASEZ), securing R43 billion in investments for Gauteng and overseeing the development of 12 state-of-the-art automotive factories.
Welcoming him to the dtic, Minister Parks Tau stated:
“Mr Hamilton brings a wealth of expertise and leadership to the organisation. We are confident he will drive industrialisation, transformation, and a capable state to greater heights.”
