Collaboration between South Africa and China is key in implementing partnerships in order to advance manufacturing in different sectors of both economies. This was said by South Africa’s Consulate General to Shanghai, Ms Phuti Tsipa, during the South African Buyers Session held at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) yesterday

According to Tsipa, emphasis should be placed on the importance of South Africans being deliberate in leveraging Chinese expertise in advanced manufacturing.

“There is a call for partnerships with our Chinese counterparts to implement advanced manufacturing in the South African economic sectors. The digital era and transfer of new technologies should be one of the key collaborations that South Africa can adopt to contribute to Africa continent’s development,” said Tsipa.

Tsipa added that there were numerous opportunities for both domestic business partnerships with the Chinese that can expand to other African countries to advance the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in order to boost the Intra-African Trade.

“The strong growth in bilateral trade relations between South Africa and China is visible through South Africa’s high quality products currently available in the Chinese market. Our agreements on the stone fruit protocol and the presence of our beef in the Chinese market are some of the interventions that South Africa prioritised in order to penetrate the Chinese and Asian markets,” she said.

Tsipa stressed the importance of partnerships that prioritise value-addition through technology and infrastructure, and marketing strategies that resonate with Chinese consumers in order to ensure product familiarisation and loyalty.

“The Chinese market’s preference for high-quality products and the South African government’s emphasis on value- added and benefiaciation for South African exporters is important in ensuring the supply capacity and product quality of our South African exporters and businesses looking for collaborations and investors,” she added.

Tsipa encouraged the South African companies to continue participating in events like the CIIE to explore and exploit the Chinese market’s unlimited potential. She said the platform was crucial for the South African companies to showcase their products and engage directly with the Chinese consumers and innovators.
