Deputy Minister Alexandra Lilian Amelia Abrahams
Alexandra Abrahams is the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition of the Republic of South Africa, bringing a distinctly People-centred ethos to one of the nation’s most pivotal economic portfolios.
Born and raised in Cape Town, Abrahams holds an undergraduate degree in International Relations and an Honours degree in Political Science from the University of Stellenbosch. Her political career began in 2009 when she joined the Democratic Alliance, marking the start of a trajectory defined by principled leadership and a commitment to public service.
Abrahams gained early experience at the Western Cape Department of Social Development, where she worked closely with communities facing deep social and economic vulnerability. This exposure solidified her passion for social justice and reinforced her belief that evidence-driven policy can meaningfully transform lives.
Elected to the National Assembly in 2019 and now serving her second term, Abrahams has built a respected track record in parliamentary oversight. Known for her integrity, diligence and strong moral compass, she has consistently championed accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights.
In her current role as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Abrahams supports the Government of National Unity in advancing South Africa’s industrial development, trade relations, and driving investment that fuels inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Her progression from social development to economic policy underscores her belief that a thriving, job-creating economy is fundamental to social upliftment and national stability.
Abrahams continues to be guided by a vision of an equitable, opportunity-rich South Africa—one where economic policy is firmly connected to the lived realities of its people.
