The Department of Trade and Industry and Competition (the dtic) together with National Treasury and their stakeholders will host the Industrial Parks Revitalisation Webinar on tomorrow, 8 July 2020 from 14:00-16:30.
The webinar will focus on areas around shared global and South African good practices and lessons learned in developing a strategic vision, conceptualisation, design, and management of industrial spaces. The webinar will also explore key components of an eco-system in designing and developing industrial spaces, and explore how green competitiveness can be integrated into the design of greenfield industrial spaces and retrofitted into existing brownfield industrial spaces.
The Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Ms Nomalungelo Gina, says the workshop is aimed at achieving these objectives by covering topics such as the strategic role and function of Industrial Spaces in the context of overall economic and how the strategic role and function influence vision and mandate of industrial spaces among others.
“The National Treasury through the Cities Support Programme is also implementing an Industrial Parks Revitalisation Programme in partnership with municipalities. The initiative entails implementing a business retention and expansion survey, developing and packaging projects and action plans, and implementation and institutionalisation of proposed interventions. The programme also aims at working with the various national and subnational government and private stakeholders to address some of the policy issues around this topic,” says Gina.
She adds that the work done by both the dtic and National Treasury in industrial park spaces have highlighted the importance of strong and visionary governance and management arrangements within the industrial parks to ensure that the revitalisation initiatives are sustained.
the dti launched its industrial park revitalisation programme in 2015 with a focus on infrastructure provision within the older industrial parks throughout the country, primarily within historic decentralisation areas. These industrial parks are recognised as catalysts for broader economic and industrial development in their host regions. The Industrial Park Revitalisation Programme focuses on both the physical infrastructure and other support requirements with the key objective of enhancing industrialisation.
