Supporting the Intellectual Property (IP) protection in the creative industry will ensure that the economy succeeds in producing the know-how and outputs that are of global standards. This was said by the Director for Innovation, Technology Policy and Strategy at the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), Ms Nontombi Maseko. She was speaking at the World Intellectual Property Day (WIPD) celebrations in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.
According to Maseko, these global standards will stimulate growth and development of the country, while creating sustainable employment opportunities.
“The creative industry is at the heart of Innovation. Innovation has been and continues to be recognised as central to promoting and supporting sustainable economic development. the dtic and the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) are in the forefront of the legislative and governance support in order to nurture the industry to grow,” said Maseko.
She explained that the key domains within the creative economy which significantly contribute to the gross domestic product were inclusive of design and creative services, audio-visual and Interactive media.
“The specific industries are advertising, design, and media, fuelled by the interplay of creativity, ideas, and intellectual property, offering opportunities for wealth creation and job growth. It is for this reason that the dtic developed a Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) Masterplan in 2022. The department furthermore established Incentives to support the growth of this industry,” she said.
The World Intellectual Property Day celebration aimed to create a general awareness on IP by educating students, the music sector and the public about the role and importance of IP in music, and also, to motivate and inspire musicians to embrace IP as a tool for their career growth and sustainability in the music industry.
The event was a partnership comprising the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (Sedfa), National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO), Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), Durban Film Festival (DFO) and the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT).
