The Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition published the reviewed draft Consumer Goods and Services Industry, and South African Automotive Industry Codes, in terms of the Consumer Protection Act, 2008 (CPA), on 9 May 2025. Both codes, which have been accredited in line with section 82 of the CPA, provide for the establishment of the Ombud offices. The offices provide free alternative dispute resolution mechanism between the suppliers and the consumers in the goods and services, and motor industries, respectively.
The reviewed codes promote and enhance corporate governance compliance, fostering effective functioning of the Ombud offices, and provide for mechanisms to deal with disputes between the participants and the Ombuds.
