SA Businesspeople Have High Hopes for the Trade And Investment Mission to Zambia |
| The South African business representatives who arrived in Zambia for a week-long Outward Trade and Investment Mission to Lusaka and Kitwe, Zambia that started yesterday to Friday, 16 August 2019 have high hopes about the mission.
The 28 South African businesspeople are funded by the dti through its Export Market and Invest Assistance scheme (EMIA). State-owned development finance institutions such Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa and the Industrial Development Corporation, and export councils such as the South African Electro-Technical Export Council, South African Capital Equipment Export Council, and the Steel Tube Export Association of South Africa are part of the delegation. The mission is led by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) with the aim of facilitating market access and expose the South African companies to the Zambian market while deepening bilateral trade relations. According to the Executive Director of Steel Tube Export Association of South Africa Mr Keitumetse Moumakoe, the mission presents them with an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with the Zambian Manufacturers Association (ZAM) on how they can align the growing Zambian steel sector with that of South Africa for mutual benefit. “We expect that steel fabrication companies we have appointments with in Zambia will embrace the use of more steel tubes in their projects thereby increasing the export of steel tubes and pipes that are not manufactured domestically in Zambia,” said Moumakoe. Moumakoe urged South African businesspeople to approach the Zambian market with a collaborative approach looking to harness and leverage on competencies that both Zambia and SA have. “I trust that the Zambian companies will buy into this approach and trust that by working together both can foster greater bilateral trade between the two countries in line with the ideals of regional integration,” says Moumakwe. The Chief Executive Officer of the South African Electrotechnical Export Council (SAEEC) She added that their slogan Maximising African Content In African Projects is derived from a collective desire to collaborate with other private sector organisations and industry associations on the African continent to ensure African economies benefit from the significant infrastructure investment anticipated for the continent. The Chief Executive Officer of Tamuda Engineering, Mr Terry Kumira says the mission provides will provide the insight of the economic dynamics and opportunities. He added that he was particularly looking forward to the site visits and business-to-business meetings that he is scheduled to attend. “We are here to look for partnerships and understand the state of the rolling stock in the Zambian Rail sector,” adds Kumira. The Chief Executive Officer of Rail, Roads Association of Southern Africa, Ms Mesela Nhlapo said South Africa was open for business and the delegation is not in Zambia to sell, but to look for partnerships, we need to know what the Zambian companies can offer and get and understanding of where the opportunities are in Zambia for these partnerships to materialide.
