A group of South African companies that operate in the defence sector, has  arrived in Istanbul, Türkiye. They will be showcasing their proudly South African products and services at the South African National Pavilion during the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF), taking place, from 22-27 July 2025.  The companies are looking to expand their export markets.

The participation is facilitated by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) through its Export Marketing and Investment Assistance (EMIA) scheme, which funds the development of exporters, enabling them to explore new markets  and attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into South Africa.

According to the Senior Manager Industry, Support and Business Development, at Armaments Corporation of South Africa SOC Ltd, Mr Shane George, the delegation is excited to be part of IDEF 2025 and is seeking to form strong collaborative partnerships and relationships with the Turkish government and industry.

“In terms of our responsibility of creating and maintaining systems, we are going to be having meetings with some of the international Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), in looking for solutions and expanding current contracts. We will also discuss some of the challenges we have with some of these OEMs in maintaining systems. We are confident that, by the end of the week we would have strengthened the bilateral relationships between South Africa and Türkiye , as our critical partner,” says George.

The Owner of Swatek Defence and Aerospace, which specialises in the design, development, and production of high-quality cable harnesses and control boxes for various industries, Dr Khulile Mtsetfwa, is excited and grateful to be part of the delegation. Dr Mtsetfwa says she will be showcasing her company`s electrical systems which are used in the military and aviation industries.

“South Africa has the capabilities in the military sector and one of them is the electrical systems that Swatek supplies . We are bringing skills, capabilities and a variety of offerings, one of them being electrical systems for the vehicles,” adds Dr Mtsetfwa.

The Chief Executive Officer of QP DroneTech, a company that offers commercial drone services for disaster preparedness and management, Ms Queen Ndlovu, says she is looking for potential partners to use her company’s drones and services. She adds that she is determined to find research and development partners to improve on some of the services and specifications of their drones that they use in the climate change and sustainability activities.

IDEF 2025 is an internationally acclaimed event showcasing the latest technological advancements and products in the defence industry. This premier exhibition brings together leading figures in the defence sector, offering a significant platform for South Africa to display its defence capabilities and build strategic partnerships with key role-players in Turkiye, as well as with participants from other high-growth markets across Eurasia, the Middle East and North Africa.

The department secured a 164m² Pavillion, where South African companies will showcase capabilities, products and services to existing and potential customers.
