the dti to Host Dialogue on Special Economic Zones National Strategy in Port Elizabeth |
| The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) will host the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) national strategy and policy dialogue at Coega SEZ, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape from 25-26 February 2020. The dialogue seeks to engage all SEZs and strategic partners on the SEZ Strategy and the implementation of the SEZ programme in the next 10 years.
According to the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Fikile Majola who will address the dialogue, SEZs are key instruments to accelerating the country’s industrial development agenda. To this end, he says the dialogue will be used as an opportunity to introduce the SEZ strategy to all strategic partners, providing them with the opportunity to contribute significantly to the growth and development of the SEZs and as a build up to the 2nd biannual National SEZ Investment Conference in 2021. “the dti has developed the first draft of SEZ strategy to guide the implementation of the SEZ programme. The draft was presented to the SEZ Chief Executive Officers’ Forum last year. The strategy will now be introduced to all strategic partners, providing them with the opportunity to contribute significantly to the growth and development of the SEZs,” says Majola. Importantly, Majola says the dialogue will discuss the new approach that has been developed to promote the South African SEZ value proposition. The dialogue will also bring together SEZs, national governments, provincial governments and local governments providing a multi stakeholder platform to engage in a robust debate on SEZs, and share ideas and engage in constructive dialogue on the challenges and opportunities confronting SEZs. “The goals and objectives of the SEZ Strategic Framework include outlining the approach and focus of the SEZ Programme during the next 10 years and to ensure that the South African SEZ programme facilitates an effective business environment to achieve local economic integration,” adds Majola.
