The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) will showcase South Africa’s mining expertise of more than a century at the 16th  West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra, Ghana. A delegation of twenty-two local companies with diverse expertise in the mining value chain will form part of South Africa’s delegation of companies that will showcase their latest products, technologies and innovations at the expo from 1-3 June 2022.

WAMPEX is one of the most important industry meeting places in the mining calendar where leading suppliers from across the globe participate to showcase their latest technologies, innovations and products but more importantly, to build leads, network and do business.

WAMPEX runs alongside the West African Mining and Power Conference where senior government and industry heads and influencers discuss policy, legislation, challenges and market developments.

The Deputy Director-General of Export Development, Promotion and Outward Investments at the dtic, Ms Lerato Mataboge explains that WAMPEX will expose South African companies to real export opportunities as identified by the dtic and allow South African companies an opportunity to interface and exchange business contacts and leads with their Ghanaian counterparts and other businesspeople within the West African region and beyond.

“South Africa remains one of Ghana’s most important bilateral partners within the sub-region in terms of trade and investments. Trade between the two countries has significantly increased over the past few years from USD$708 million in 2016 to over USD$2 billion in 2019, making Ghana home to many South African products and investors,” she says.

Mataboge adds that the implementation of the WAMPEX National Pavilion is an important initiative for promoting Intra-African trade and investment as per the dtic’s mandate.

“Overall, this exhibition will contribute to the achievement of our priorities by increasing the total value of exports; the composition of exports; as well as the composition of the exporters; which also include small anad medium enterprises, Black-owned companies and companies from diverse geographic locations in South Africa which are usually under-represented in the dtic export promotion activities,” says Mataboge.
