Establishment of the National Policy Councils

National Liquor Policy Council (NLPC)

The National Liquor Policy Council is established in terms of Chapter 6, section 37 of the Liquor Act. The Council consists of the Minister whom chairs the meetings, Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for each province, responsible for liquor licensing in the province, the Director-General (DG) or any other employee of the department designated by the DG, and for each province designated in terms of applicable provincial legislation or by the member of the executive council responsible for liquor licensing in the province. The voting members of the Council are the Minister of Trade and Industry and the respective nine Member of the Executive Council (MECs) that are responsible for liquor licensing in the provinces.

National Gambling Policy Council (NGPC)

The National Gambling Policy Council is established in terms of Chapter 4, section 61 of the National Gambling Act. The Minister of Trade and Industry is the chairperson of council meetings and may convene a meeting of the council at any time, but must convene at least two meetings in a financial year. Members of the executive council from each province responsible for casinos, racing, gambling and wagering in the province are Council members whom meet with the Minister to discuss policy issues in relation to gambling as these industries are of concurrent and exclusive jurisdiction and require National and Provincial interaction of political principals. The voting members of the Council are the Minister of Trade and Industry and the respective nineMember of the Executive Council (MECs) that are responsible for gambling matters in the provinces.E
