The Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Ebrahim Patel today paid tribute to sociologist and academic Professor Eddie Webster, who sadly passed away.

“Eddie came from a school of engaged intellectuals who saw injustice in the South African labour market and brought their skills to analyse the conditions of workers and to advocate for change. He was a man of enormous imagination and a commitment to working for a society characterised by fairness,” Minister Patel said today.

“Eddie was an initiator of the early labour studies in SA and was a founding member of the SA Labour Bulletin. He was academically lauded, including being recognised in 2004 as the country’s leading sociologist. His work inspired many young people to think in different ways about growth and fairness. We will miss him, his ideas and his contribution,” Minister Patel said.
