The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) will host a graduation ceremony for beneficiaries of the Itukise Programme at the RH Hotel, Sunnyside, Pretoria on Friday, 10 March 2023 from 10:00. The purpose of the ceremony is to celebrate and hand over completion certificates to the interns, in-service trainees and professional candidates who have successfully completed the programme.

Itukise is a graduate internship programme aimed at providing relevant work experience to unemployed graduates. The programme serves to improve employability and the work-readiness of young unemployed graduates by building their confidence, as well as their technical and soft skills through a 12 to 36-month internship in private companies.

The programme’s overarching goal is to increase the employability of unemployed graduates by providing them with work experience opportunities at the dtic-supported companies. The exposure in a work environment for at least 12 months assists in improving the work-readiness, job-hunting skills and social capital of young graduates.

Global and local research has shown that in a tight labour market with low employment growth and lack of intermediate and high-level skills, the possession of relevant work experience may increase the chances of permanent job placements.

Phase 2 of the Itukise Programme was implemented from February 2019 to December 2022. It placed 1 258 interns, professional engineering candidates, and in-service trainees at 224 host employers in all nine provinces of South Africa.  An ongoing post-internship tracking programme has recorded more than 255 out of 1 258 interns already permanently employed as a direct result of their participation in the programme.

rogramme was developed in accordance with the New Growth Path, the Medium-Term-Strategic Framework, the Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP) and the National Skills Development Strategy.
