The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) welcomes the announcement by Arcelor Mittal SA (AMSA) to defer a decision on the future of the Newcastle steel Plant. This follows extensive discussions with the company since December 2023 and offers an immediate relief to more than 1500 workers and to downstream customers who rely on long-steel products from the factory.
Government has engaged the leadership of the firm as well as its customers and suppliers to identify concrete measures that can assist to support primary steel-manufacturing in South Africa.
The expected improvement in infrastructure spending, coupled with turnaround plans on transport logistics and commencement of trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), will all play a positive role in strengthening both demand and supply side challenges in line with the objectives of the steel master plan.
