The Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Ms Alexandra Abrahams says the aviation industry has a huge potential to unlock the Cape Winelands economy once the International airport is fully operational. Abrahams was speaking at a meeting held between the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) and the Cape Winelands Airport management in Cape Town.

According to Abrahams, the Cape Winelands Airport will impact positively on the aviation industry and  region. She said it would also  assist in accelerating economic growth, inclusion and job creation, by generating much needed jobs and local economic development.

“The development of the airport provides a platform for multi-sector integration, linking aerospace manufacturing, tourism, transport and retail sectors. It will act as significant catalyst for regional and national economic growth, functioning as an aerotropolis that drives services in aviation, trade, tourism, and employment,” said Abrahams.

Abrahams pointed out that there was a need for a comprehensive airport financial model from the economic cluster departments, as well as the Development Finance Institutions to support investments projects of this nature.

“A continued growth in air travel and aerospace will drive an increased demand for a more expanded airport infrastructure and eventually aerotropolis. An aerotropolis is key to driving the transformation of an airport into a vibrant economic zone driving economic growth and job creation,” she said.
