The Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Parks Tau, will designate the Fetakgomo Tubatse Special Economic Zone (FTSEZ) following Cabinet support and approval.

The SEZ is located in the Sekhukhune District in the Limpopo province covering a total of 1 000 hectares of land which has been secured for the development.

This SEZ will be implemented in line with the new SEZ implementation model, which includes amongst others, greater participation of the private sector and strong involvement of all three spheres of government in the planning, development and management of the zone. The new model has already been tested through the implementation of Tshwane Automotive SEZ .12 factories, including bulk infrastructure were built in 18 months in TASEZ, creating over 3500 permanent jobs. This successful model will now replicated in all new Special Economic Zones.

The development of the SEZ will proceed in three phases. Phase One involves the development of the northern section of the site, located between the R555 and the Steelpoort River, forming the northern boundary. This phase will support light to medium industries. Phase Two will encompass the central portion of the property, situated directly south of the R555, while Phase Three will cover the southern section.

Tau says this SEZ will serve as an industrial hub that offers strategic, national and regional economic advantages, attracting targeted investments in mining, mineral beneficiation, energy, agriculture, and automotive sectors.

“The SEZ entity has been established and is operational. The board has also been appointed. The National Project Management Unit (PMU) at the IDC, conducted an investment Due Diligence on the FTSEZ. The exercise showed that nine investors are committed to proceeding with their investments. A total of 46 companies are currently on the investment pipeline with a combined investment value of approximately R52,6 billion. We foresee that these companies will create 8 000 jobs in the short term and over 20 000 jobs in 10 years,” he said.

He added that as the SEZ offers opportunities for beneficiation, it will support the development and strengthening of the Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), Chrome and Hydrogen Value Chains.

The Limpopo government has committed to providing financial support for the development of critical infrastructure, while the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) has pledged to fund key infrastructure projects that serve as enablers for the successful implementation of the SEZ.
