South Africa and Poland are well positioned to deepen their economic partnership in ways that promote inclusive growth, stimulate investment, create employment opportunities, and foster shared prosperity for both countries. This is according to the Head of Invest SA at the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), Mr Yunus Hoosen. He was presenting trade and investment opportunities in South Africa at the South Africa–Poland Business Roundtable held in Johannesburg.

The round table was attended by both South African and Polish businesspeople with an objective to explore collaborations and building of strong partnerships.  It offered an opportunity for exchanges and sectoral conversations that will enable increased efforts to improve trade and investment relationships.

“By combining Poland’s technological capabilities and manufacturing expertise with South Africa’s natural resources, infrastructure programmes, market access, industrial capabilities and a strategic position as a gateway to the African continent, significant opportunities for economic growth can be unlocked,” said Hoosen.

He added that South Africa was committed to deepening collaborations with Poland in areas such as renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, innovation, research and development, industrialisation, battery production, energy storage, critical minerals, agriculture, and infrastructure development.

Hoosen said South Africa was currently implementing a substantial infrastructure investment programme, creating opportunities for international partnerships.

“Trade remains a key pillar of our bilateral relationship. Poland is an important partner for South Africa in Europe, with exports that include advanced machinery and manufactured products. South African businesses also finding opportunities within the Polish market. Several South African companies have already established a presence in Poland, while Polish firms continue to explore opportunities in South Africa. This two-way investment relationship demonstrates the confidence that businesses from both countries have in each other’s economies,” added Hoosen.

He pointed out that the South African energy programme required significant investment in generation capacity, transmission infrastructure, grid expansion and energy storage solutions, which is another investment opportunity for the Polish businesspeople.

“We are also accelerating the rollout of renewable energy projects and exploring opportunities in gas and other energy technologies.  These developments present exciting opportunities for Polish companies with expertise in engineering, technology, manufacturing and energy solutions,” stressed Hoosen.

He urged businesspeople to identify practical projects, build commercial partnerships and explore areas where respective strengths can complement one another. In addition, Hoosen emphasised South Africa’s commitment to strengthening the partnership between the two countries through the Joint Commission and various trade and investment initiatives.

“To support investors, South Africa offers a range of financing and development support mechanisms through development finance institutions and various government programmes. We are also strengthening our investment facilitation capabilities through a one-stop-shop approach, ensuring that investors receive coordinated support and clear points of contact throughout the investment process,” added Hoosen.

Poland is an important economic partner for South Africa as a member of the European Union. In 2025, Poland is South Africa’s seventh-largest trading partner within the European Union, with total bilateral trade reaching US$1.6 billion.
