The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) has welcomed the commitment made by the United States of America  (USA) to support the participation of ten export ready black-owned South African businesses to participate in the Atlanta-based Go Global Conference International Trade and Investment Expo. This offer compliments the dtic’s trade promotion efforts into the USA market, particularly the contribution to diversifying South Africa’s exporter base.

This is according to the Chief Director of Export Promotion and Marketing at the dtic, Ms Zanele Sanni. She was speaking at the Trade and Investment Seminar of the Atlanta Phambili Initiative organised by the dtic in partnership with Standard Bank, the Gauteng Province and Brand South Africa.

The seminar, which took place in Johannesburg yesterday, was the first in a series of events aimed at showcasing South Africa’s economic diversity, cultural heritage as well as fostering linkages in the education, science and sports sectors, to a 35-member visiting delegation led by the Mayor of Atlanta City, Mr Andre Dickens.

Sanni added that through Initiatives such as Atlanta Phambili, the dtic would continue mobilising and empowering  local export- ready companies to diversify their export offerings, thereby leveraging trade agreements such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). She emphasised that South Africa was perfectly poised to become the headquarters of  Atlanta-based companies that want to trade and invest with both South Africa and the rest of the continent.

“To this effect, investment opportunities were also presented in the manufacturing, resource based industries, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and services sectors, with a particular emphasis on programmes in the green economy,” added Sanni.

The Trade and Investment Seminar concluded with the unveiling of a pledge committing to fostering shared prosperity; promoting stronger trade and investment ties, increasing knowledge exchange and technical collaboration as well as deepening people to people cooperation.
