The support that the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) gives to companies to enable them to participate in international exhibitions, is not only promoting transformation, but also provides them with a valuable opportunity to access global markets.
This is the view of the Chief Executive Officer of the South African Aerospace Maritime Defence Export Council (SAAMDEC), Mr Sandile Ndlovu. He was speaking on the eve of the 2024 edition of the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) Exhibition that takes place at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria from tomorrow, 18-22 September 2024.
Ten companies have been supported by the dtic to showcase their products and services at the exhibition.
“A defining feature of AAD 2024 is the National Pavilion, which will showcase companies supported by the dtic. This support demonstrates the department’s vital role in advancing the defence sector by providing crucial support to emerging companies and encouraging their participation in international trade. The support has been transformative for these companies. It enables them to attend international exhibitions such as AAD 2024, which provides a valuable opportunity to access global markets,” says Ndlovu.
He adds that companies such as Aditive Solutions, Areta Consultants, Defcon Protec and Desert Wolf Consulting will be displaying their capabilities in fields ranging from advanced manufacturing to security systems. Nylo Comp Distributors, PJ Aviation, Sovereignty Systems and Unipro Protective Wear will also showcase their contributions to protective gear, aviation technology and cybersecurity.
Ndlovu says support provided by the dtic has a cascading impact on the wider sector, stimulating the growth of SMMEs, enhancing the global competitiveness of South African defence products and ultimately contributing to economic development.
“The exposure and credibility gained through the dtic assistance allow these companies to secure new contracts, enter untapped markets and form and sustain relationships with international buyers,” he explains.
Ndlovu notes that AAD 2024 will also provide an opportunity to showcase the vital role that the defence sector plays in the South African economy.
“AAD 2024 will present the very best of South Africa’s defence innovations. This biennial showcase serves as a platform not only for the display of cutting-edge military technologies but also for the advancement of economic growth and innovation. The South African defence industry contributes significantly to high-tech manufacturing, job creation and the development SMMEs,” he says.
He outlines that by promoting international partnerships and exporting advanced defence technologies, the sector will strengthen both national security and economic stability.
