Two South African productions supported by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) will be screened at the 48th annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) tomorrow, 9 September 2023. The festival, which is taking place in Canada started yesterday and will be running until 17 September 2023.

The Death of a Whistleblower will take centre stage with a world premiere that is expected to attract attention from other filmmakers who have descended on Toronto from across the world.  The film is produced by Tshepiso Chikapa Phiri and Ian Gabriel. With Noxolo Dlamini, Irshaad Ally, Kathleen Stephens, Deon Coetzee amongst the cast.

It’s a two-hour long drama that delves into the real experiences in South Africa tackling issues of corruption. The production is Directed by Ian Gabriel (who directed Four Corners) and co-written by Ian Gabriel, Louis Viljoen (prolific playwright with The Bile Boys, The Verbalists), and Marius Scholtz (The Tornado Outside).

The Death of a Whistleblower has been supported by the dtic under the South African Black Filmmakers  programme for an incentive amount of R14 million with a qualifying spend of R29 million and 29% projected local procurement from 51% black South African companies.

The Umbrella Men is a South African comedy crime drama series directed by John Barker and written by John Barker and Phillip Roberts. It features South African stars such as Sivuyile Ngesi, Shamilla Miller and Kagiso Lediga. This is the second drama series that is screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The first one was The Umbrella Men 1.

The Umbrella Men was supported under the South African Film and Television incentive of R9 million and South African spend of R24 million and 41,36% projected local procurement from 51% black South African companies. The production will be screened on ETV.
