Technology and Human Resource for Industry Programme (THRIP)

The Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme (THRIP) previously implemented by the National Research Foundation (NRF) is a grant designed to leverage collaborative partnerships between government and industry working together with academia and /or scientific researchers for applied research and development of projects in science, engineering, and technology on a cost-sharing basis, to produce highly skilled human resources and technology solutions, improved industry and enterprise competitiveness.

OBJECTIVE OF THRIP
- Development of new technologies for industry application, subsequent industrialisation and commercialisation through applied research and development,
- Improved Knowledge exchange and technology transfer through increased interaction and mobility among researchers in Higher Education Institutions (HEI`s) and Science, Engineering and Technology Institutions (SETI`s) as well as technology personnel in South African Industries h
- Increases investment by industry and government, in applied research and technology development
- Technology transfer, product or process improvement or development, through applied research collaboration between enterprises (large and small), HEI`s and SET`s
THE OBJECTIVES WILL BE SUPPORTED THROUGH THE FOLLOWING PRIORITIES OF THE PROGRAMME:
- Applied research and innovation projects
- Projects within the priority sectors for development as identified by the dtic and aligned with master plans where new technology innovations will increase local content supply and employment.
- Achieving transformation with respect to Nationality and race of students involved, involvement of previously disadvantaged higher education institutions and strengthening of black-owned enterprises.
- Strengthening participation of SMMEs in new technology innovations
- Improving prospects for industrialisation and commercialisation post-THRIP support
BENEFITS
RESEARCH EXPENDITURE AND MATERIALS COSTS
- THRIP offers advance or pre-payment grant of up to ninety percent (90%) for approved project costs. The grant offering is from R5 million to a maximum of R15 million per approved project paid through milestones.
- Researcher’s remuneration costs including those of research assistants and post-doctoral fellows (non-bursary holders).
- The incentive or grant covers 100% of qualifying bursary costs for all students involved in the project,
- The costs of graduates placed in the projects on a cost-sharing basis for a fixed contract of two (2) years,
- Local travel costs up to a maximum of R30 000 per annum on a cost-sharing basis.
COMPETITIVENESS COSTS
- The costs of qualifying research equipment and materials on a cost-sharing basis,
- Intellectual Property (IP) Legal Costs to a maximum of R50 000 once off, Patent Registrations and Litigation costs on a cost-sharing basis up to a maximum of R1 million
- Pre-commercialisation costs of up to R250 000 per annum on a cost-sharing basis
